Event Description

Learn how to transform fresh-picked, seasonal ingredients into a delicious & healthy meal. Shop at the Durham Farmers Market with 2 knowledgeable cooking instructors before heading to the teaching kitchen at Durham Spirits Company for a guided lunch preparation. You’ll pick up plenty of tips from these engaging & entertaining professionals. A glass of wine or a locally-brewed beer from Fullsteam Brewery is included with your flavorful 3-course lunch.

Meet at the Pavilion of Durham’s Central Park at 501 Foster Street – the home of the Saturday morning market – then let the chefs guide you around in purchasing lunch ingredients. Once the group has assembled everything you need, you’ll drive separately to the home of Durham Spirits Company’s Chef-Proprietor Katie Coleman, a gracious old house about a mile from the market at 311 E. Trinity Avenue. Once there, Katie and Pastry Chef Gwen Cummings Maller of Mateo Tapas will instruct you by cooking a 3-course lunch with your assistance. You’ll snack on appetizers as you prepare your entrée & dessert courses.

Established in 1998, the producer-only Durham Farmers Market is a popular destination for locally-grown food & hand-crafted items. It features 70 vendors from within 70 miles of Durham.

Katie Coleman, a South Carolina native, has spent the last ten years cooking all over the world, including France, Italy, and Seattle, WA. She has worked in 4 Star restaurants, including the Ritz Carlton, and has had the privilege of cooking for Anthony Bourdain twice. Upon moving to Durham, she became an instructor at the Art Institute of Durham’s cooking program. In addition to running the Durham Spirits Company cooking school, Katie teaches classes at Southern Season, is a guest chef at the Durham Farmers Market, and is a Certified Executive Chef from the American Culinary Federation. Katie’s love of everything related to food & bourbon shines through in her recipes, her engaging teaching style and in the comfortable old-home setting of the Durham Spirits Company teaching school.

Gwen Cummings Gwen Cummings Maller is the Pastry Chef at Durham’s highly-acclaimed, James Beard-nominated Mateo Tapas Restaurant. Originally from Chapel Hill, Gwen studied Pastry at the French Culinary Institute in New York City. Since returning to the area, she’s been the pastry chef at some of Durham & Chapel Hill’s most popular restaurants. Gwen also spent 3 years as a supervisor at the Cooking School at Southern Season, where she met & worked with some of the most famous chefs in the U.S., and taught classes there, including her still-popular “Creative Cupcakes.” If you love pastry, and want to learn some great baking tips, you’ll want to meet Gwen.
